Love Yourself Chords in Depth Analysis

Above are the chords of love yourself song with lyrics, and now we will analyze this song’s chords and chord progression. So let’s get started it.

Love yourself is a meaningful song by Justin Beiber in the key of E Major, but to make it easy for you, we transposed it to C Major by placing a capo on the 4th fret. In this song, he uses a total of 6 chords, 5 diatonic, which are C Major, A minor, D minor G Major, F Major and 1 slashed chord, which is G/B. From these chords, he creates the 3 chord sequences or chord progressions that he uses in the Verse, pre-chorus and Chorus.

First, let’s analyze the Verse-

Verse- In Verse, he uses the C Major as the first and root chord of the key. Then he moved to the 5th chord, G/B, known as the dominant chord of the scale. Still, in this case, he uses the b  7th note of the scale as the base note in this chord, making it a slashed chord. Then he moved to the subdominant chord because it is near the dominant A minor (6th chord), then moved to the Supertonic chord, which is D minor, and then again used the Root chord C Major and Dominant chord, G Major, to complete this chord progression. Now the chord progression is-

Play 5 times

Note- This chord progression he used in the all verses

Pre Chorus- The pre-chorus starts from a 6th A minor and subdominant chord, then he again uses the subdominant chord, but this time he uses the 4th chord, A Major and then moves to the root chord, that is C Major.

The progression become- ⅵ-Ⅳ-Ⅰ

This progression he used two times. Then the third time he added the 5th chord in the last. Now the new progression becomes-

To end the pre chorus he uses the first 2 chords the same and added the 5th chord in the last to move all the music towards Chorus.

These chord progressions he uses in the all pre choruses.

Chorus- In the Chorus, he uses 2 chord progressions. The first starts from the Root chord C Major then moves to the 5th Chord Dominant chord, then use the 6th chord of the scale, which is A minor, and in the last, he uses the 4th chord of the scale F Major.

The chord progression comes-

The second chord progression was that he uses in the chorus is-

Play both chord progressions two time in the same sequence

Note- These chord progressions he used in the all choruses

Instrumental-In the instrumental part, he uses the same chord progressions that he uses in the Chorus in the same sequence that is-

Play 2 times.
